Vehicle Gates at Some City Parks Will Close For Season Starting October 1

Parks Remain Open Daily from 8 a.m. to Sunset All Year

Starting Friday, October 1, vehicle gates at some City of Kalamazoo parks will close for the fall and winter months. Vehicle gates will reopen in May. Parks will continue to be open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset.

This will affect vehicle access at Spring Valley Park, Milham Park, Woods Lake Park, and Fairmount Dog Park. Gates at Versluis Dickinson Park will remain closed after Fall Softball is completed.

Residents can still enjoy all of Kalamazoo’s city parks throughout the fall and winter months as nearby parking will continue to be available. At Milham Park, the parking lot on Kilgore Road near the picnic shelter is open year-round, as is the large parking lot at Spring Valley Park near the water tower on Mt. Olivet Road. The upper parking lot will also remain available at Woods Lake Park and on-street parking is available at Fairmount Dog Park and Versluis Dickinson Park.

City parks are open year-round, but gates to some parking lots and vehicle drives are closed during the fall and winter months due to reduced staffing and less use. Restrooms and water fountains also remain closed after the Labor Day Holiday through Memorial Day (restrooms may be available beyond this timeframe for park rentals or special events if possible).

“Our city parks are still open and easy to get to, even as we wind down for the winter months” explained Patrick McVerry, Deputy Director for the City of Kalamazoo’s Parks & Recreation Department. “Kalamazoo’s parks are great places to enjoy the fall colors, and winter brings new opportunities for recreation like skiing, sledding or snow shoeing. We’ll see you out there!”
