To protect our four-legged friends from the parvovirus outbreak, we have cancelled the Bark in the Park event planned for Thursday, August 26. We hope to be able to reschedule this event for some time next spring.

We will continue to follow guidance from Kalamazoo County Animal Services and Enforcement for Fairmount Dog Park. At this time we have not been advised to close the dog park due to the outbreak, so it is currently open for use at the owner’s discretion. Dogs experiencing parvovirus symptoms or that have been exposed to it should stay home.

Community Invited to Bark in the Park Event at Fairmount Dog Park

Event will include a puppy parade, obstacle course demonstration, and adoption event

Kzoo Parks and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Southwest Michigan will host a Bark in the Park event at Fairmount Dog Park (1108 Prairie Avenue) on Thursday, August 26 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Residents are encouraged to dress up their dogs and join the puppy parade for a chance to win prizes. The SPCA will be demonstrating obstacle courses, sharing training tips for dog owners, and hosting an adoption event with several dogs available for adoption from their shelter.

“We hope to see a lot of Kalamazoo’s four-legged residents for a fun afternoon at Fairmount,” said Shannon Keene, a Special Event Coordinator for Kzoo Parks, “or if you’re looking to adopt it’s a great opportunity to meet some dogs in need of a loving home.”

Attendees should remain cautious and follow CDC and local health official guidelines to protect themselves and the community from COVID-19. This event is free, and all community members are welcome. Community members can RSVP to the event on Facebook at
